Alfred Freddy Krupa made this Pseudo Rorschach Test in 2019 with ink on paper. This piece, like many Rorschach blots, plays with the idea of symmetry, but it is also deeply asymmetrical, and intuitive, embracing spontaneity, chance, and process. The textures here are really interesting. Krupa coaxes a variety of marks out of his materials. Some are thick and pooling, others scratchy, or thin and washy. Look at the upper right area of the image, see how the ink pools and drips down the page? This gives the work an active and dynamic energy. It feels like a performance. The stark monochrome palette adds to the dramatic effect, heightening the contrast between light and shadow. This work reminds me a little of the psychological landscapes of Leon Golub, who also used unconventional approaches to image making, in order to tap into something primal and authentic. Just like our readings of art, or life, are never fixed, or definitive, but always open to new insights.
