Robert Frank made ‘Andorra—Trip to Spain A15’ with photography, his signature material, at an unknown date. I’m drawn to the way Frank layers strips of film here. It’s almost like a collage, a way of disrupting the single image to create something new. The graininess and the stark contrast – the blacks are so black, the whites so white – give it a raw, unfiltered feel. There's a sense of immediacy, like we're looking at fragments of memories pieced together. Notice how some frames are upside down? It’s a small detail, but it throws everything off balance, a glitch in the system. It reminds me that seeing isn’t just about recording, it’s about actively constructing meaning. Frank invites us to slow down, to really look, and to question what we think we know. His work echoes that of other image-makers like Gerhard Richter, who similarly explore the fractured nature of representation. Ultimately, Frank reminds us that art isn’t about answers, but about opening up new ways of seeing.
