Studieblad met verschillende aanzichten van bloemen, waaronder de teunisbloem 1842 - 1885
Dimensions height 327 mm, width 257 mm
Claude Sauvageot created this study sheet with different views of flowers, including the evening primrose, in the 19th century. Sauvageot was working during a time when there was a growing interest in botany and natural history, particularly in the decorative arts. In this drawing, the flowers are presented with a striking emphasis on symmetry and ornamental qualities, which was a popular element in design during the 1800s. But, if you look closely, there is a tension between objective botanical observation, and the aesthetic appeal of the primrose. It serves as a reminder of how nature has often been viewed through the lens of human perception and artistic interpretation. In the absence of color, the monochromatic palette invites a focus on form and structure, subtly directing our gaze. The image reflects broader societal ideas about nature, and beauty, inviting us to consider how these notions are shaped by cultural and historical contexts.
