Curator: How about we consider this pen and ink sketch from Sir George Howland Beaumont? It is a small piece, just 119 by 168 mm. Editor: I am immediately drawn to the figure on the left – he seems burdened, leaning heavily on his staff. Curator: Beaumont had a deep admiration for classical landscape painting. Here, the figures give the scene a pastoral quality. Editor: There is a tension, though. The other group—with what seems to be a fishing net and children—feels connected, whereas the lone man is isolated by the composition. Is he an outsider, or simply resting from his labors? Curator: Perhaps he is a witness, contemplating a scene we cannot perceive. The sketchiness lends itself to many interpretations. Editor: Right, the medium encourages us to fill in the blanks and think critically about what these characters represent in relation to one another. It is an incomplete story we are invited to complete.
