This is Carel Adolph Lion Cachet's “Ontwerp voor een monumentale bank ter ere van burgemeester van Haarlem Cornelis Maarschalk van Egmond en Rinnegom”, made with pen and grey ink and brush in grey and black ink. I'm struck by the economy of the marks in this piece. Cachet is really stripping the idea of a monument down to its bare bones here. I see a quickness to the hand, a seeking out of form through line. The monument almost feels like it’s breathing, wavering ever so slightly as he tries to get the form just right. I wonder if Cachet saw painting as a way to honor the world around him? As a painter myself, I find the everyday is made more special by giving it the attention of my eye and hand. It's like I am trying to understand and connect with him through my own creative process. Maybe that's what Cachet was up to as well.
