Curator: Let’s turn our attention to Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky's painting, often called "Children Carrying the Wood in the Snow, Winter". I find it so evocative! The weariness in the children's faces leaps out. Editor: Yes, that stark landscape... It speaks of a harsh, unrelenting life, doesn’t it? The monochromatic palette really amplifies that feeling. It's like the world is holding its breath. Curator: The materiality of the piece emphasizes that, I think. The oil paint is applied with clear, visible strokes that define the rough texture of the children’s clothes, of the wood. It is really emphasizing labor here, the weight of the bundles they carry is almost palpable. Editor: Absolutely, you can practically feel the biting wind just by looking at the way they’re bundled up. There's a story being told, isn’t there? I feel I want to go inside this painting and warm their small freezing hands. Curator: Bogdanov-Belsky painted many scenes of peasant life and rural schools, and here we are seeing those class struggles through raw material itself and its uneven distribution across society. Notice the deliberate rendering of textures, it’s all so painstakingly realistic but there are avant-garde moments, too. I'm curious: does their load look too much for their frames to you? The way these paintings can be made is not free of those very material concerns. Editor: It's incredible how a simple scene, rendered in paint, can hold so much.
