This is a photograph, *Beukenlaan in Voorst*, made by Richard Tepe, and it's now housed in the Rijksmuseum. Imagine Tepe out there, finding this perspective down a long avenue of trees. I can almost feel what it was like for him, framing that distant building between the trunks. What did the air smell like? Was it cold? Look at the composition – the way the trees line up like a colonnade, and the light filtering through the bare branches. There's a formality to it, but also a real sense of place. It reminds me of some early modernist photographers who were also trying to find a new way of seeing the world. Like, how do you capture a feeling? A mood? How can you make a photo that is both representational and intensely personal? Photography is a constant conversation, isn't it? Each artist responding to what came before, trying to push the boundaries of what's possible.
