Florin Maxa made this abstract composition, which looks like it was done with oil on canvas, with a wonderful approach to mark making. The shapes are clearly defined, yet there's a sense of play in their arrangement. Looking closer, the texture of the paint is really doing it for me. Some areas seem smooth and blended, while others have this beautiful impasto feel where you can see the individual brushstrokes. The white paint around the edges is layered on thick, almost sculptural, contrasting with the flatter planes of color within the central geometric form. I find my eyes are immediately drawn to the drips of white paint running down the dark surface; that is just luscious. It makes me think of some of the early modernist painters like Leger or Gris, but with a more personal and expressive touch. Ultimately, though, the beauty of a piece like this is that it allows for endless interpretations.
