"Hercules and Dejanira" is a small, rectangular silver plaque created by Francesco Francia between 1485 and 1499. It depicts the Greek mythological figures of Hercules and Dejanira, a scene of their fateful meeting. Dejanira, standing to the right of Hercules, is about to hand him a tunic, the poisoned garment that will later lead to Hercules' death. The plaque is a fine example of Italian Renaissance silverwork, showcasing Francia’s mastery of the technique known as niello, a black enamel that contrasts beautifully with the silver surface.
