Edward Burne-Jones made this artwork, Love in a Mist, using pencil and watercolour, and looking at it now, I feel that it is like a pre-Raphaelite daydream. The figure is caught in a swirling vortex of blue. The colors are soft and dreamlike, and the figure's posture suggests a state of vulnerability. What was Burne-Jones thinking when he made this? Was he thinking of the precarity of love? The figure in the painting feels to me like they are being enveloped, almost drowning in the blue hues. Their hands are raised to their face, maybe to protect themselves from something they can’t bear to see, or maybe they are ashamed of their feelings? The red wings are a shock of color. What do they signify? Love can lift you up, right, but it can also drag you down. I like the ambiguity of the piece; the artist offers us an image without any resolution and invites us to dive in with him.
