Edward Burne-Jones made this watercolour, Love in a Mist, sometime in the late 19th century. Looking at the texture here, I'm struck by the way the chalky strokes of blue and red work together to create this hazy, dreamy effect. It's like the whole scene is caught in a swirl, right? The figure at the centre almost seems to be emerging from the mist, or maybe being swallowed up by it. See the way the lines of colour curve and blend. That swirling effect reminds me of some of Odilon Redon's pastels, how he used colour to create a sense of mystery and otherworldliness. Burne-Jones' work, like Redon's, invites us to get lost in the ambiguity, to embrace the idea that art doesn't always have to offer easy answers. Instead, it can be a space for contemplation and exploration.
