Rudolf von Alt made this watercolor of the parish church in Ofen, using paper, pigment, and water. These are conventional materials, but the way they are handled gives this work its special quality. The transparency of watercolor allows Alt to capture the soft, diffused light across the buildings and the town square. Notice how the washes of color create a sense of depth and atmosphere, almost as if we are standing in Ofen ourselves. Watercolor demands a high level of skill; there is no opportunity for correction. Alt was a master of this medium. In his hands, the fluidity of the paint captures the energy of the street, with its figures, horse-drawn carts, and the architecture of the church, each brought to life with quick, precise brushstrokes. The technique of watercolor painting, usually associated with sketches and studies, is elevated here to create a finished work of art. Thinking about the material qualities and the artist’s deft handling reveals the true value of this work, one that goes beyond its picturesque subject.
