This dynamic composition by Jerry W. McDaniel is rendered in bold black and white. It kind of leaps off the surface, doesn't it? I can imagine McDaniel, brush in hand, building up these figures—layering them in the midst of a frenetic energy. Look at how these figures seem suspended in time, on the cusp of a dance move. The artist is using line to make these figures move and breathe and almost vibrate within the surface of the work. It’s like they are dancing with the painting itself. McDaniel's choice of monochrome really throws the eye on the pattern within the painting. There is so much energy. I feel like I'm at Harlow's! And of course, McDaniel's work exists within this wider community of image-makers, these artists who are constantly in dialogue with one another. It’s all about keeping the conversation alive, right? It's a living language, always shifting, always open to new interpretations.
