This fashion plate, made by H. Rouit in June 1932, feels like a soft dream spun from ink and paper. The figures, draped in their elegant gowns, seem to float in a space that’s more suggestion than solid architecture. I wonder, when Rouit was drawing, were they thinking about line and form, or did they just get lost in the sheer joy of imagining these women in motion? The dresses themselves - look at the way the fabric drapes, the subtle shadows, and the hints of Art Deco geometry. It’s as if the clothing is less about covering the body and more about revealing it. These fashion plates always remind me of other drawings and paintings. The play of light and shadow is reminiscent of Manet. It makes you wonder about the quiet conversation that goes on between artists across time. Each one nudging the other, inspiring new ways of seeing and feeling. It’s a reminder that art is never really finished, just passed on.
