Monogrammist DS, who was born in 1873, created this sketch of a beach scene with figures and bathing huts using graphite. The artist captures a moment in time where leisure and social interaction converge. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the beach became a popular destination for recreation, particularly among the middle and upper classes. As such, representations of the beach, like this one, often reflect societal norms around leisure, class, and gender. The bathing huts themselves are a telling sign of the changing attitudes toward modesty and public space during this time, as beaches became more socially acceptable environments. While the artist remains somewhat elusive, their work provides valuable insight into the cultural landscape of their time. Through subtle strokes and careful composition, the artist invites us to contemplate the complexities of identity, leisure, and social interaction in a rapidly changing world.
