Robert Frank made this contact sheet, 'Raoul Hague 4', using photography. Isn’t it fascinating how Frank has captured Hague's sculpture through the lens, strip after strip? The sculpture almost dances across the frame. You know, looking at this contact sheet, I'm struck by the contrast between the rigid grid of the film and the fluid forms of the sculpture itself. The way Frank frames the sculpture in each shot, it’s like he's trying to pin down something elusive, some essence of Hague's work, but of course, it slips away with each new angle. There’s something so beautiful about how Frank lets the process show: the sprocket holes, the frame numbers. It’s like he’s saying, "This is how art happens, not in a vacuum, but through layers of looking and seeing." It reminds me of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s typologies, but with a much more personal, searching touch. It's not about a perfect representation; it's about the act of looking. It’s all about the conversation, isn't it?
