Robert Frank shot this contact sheet, “Raoul Hague 4,” sometime in the mid-twentieth century using, I assume, his trusty Leica. Look at this matrix of images, like frames from a silent movie. You can see a sculpture, maybe carved from wood, sitting patiently. Frank circles certain frames in red, like choosing favorites. I imagine him in his darkroom, the red light casting long shadows as he makes these tiny edits. Photography’s like that, right? It’s about choosing, cropping, framing. It's a dance between the photographer, the subject, and the light. What was Frank thinking? Was he trying to capture the essence of Hague's sculpture, or was he after something more? It reminds me of when I make a painting, always in conversation with other artworks. This piece is Frank in conversation with Hague. It’s a meditation on form, light, and how we see.
