Kapel aan de zuidzijde van de Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk te Zaltbommel 1903
Dimensions height 231 mm, width 170 mm
Here's a vintage photo by an unknown photographer, that captures the chapel at the south side of the Grote or Sint-Maartenskerk in Zaltbommel. Look at the sepia tones. It makes me think about the physicality of dark room developing, the anticipation of waiting to see what appears and emerges from the liquid bath, like an image being born! I can only imagine what this photographer was thinking, setting up their equipment in what looks like a very empty room, with the sun streaming in from the windows. It's the kind of scene that would have captured Edward Hopper’s imagination too. There's something about the starkness that resonates today. It's an echo of other artists looking at architecture with a sense of awe, but also a sense of personal isolation, like an Agnes Martin painting. Artists are in an ongoing conversation, each work speaking to another across time and space, through shared feelings.
