Editor: This untitled work by León Ferrari consists of newspaper clippings, roughly A3 in size. The headlines are grim: bodies found, assassinations… What does this collage convey to you? Curator: Ferrari often used collage to critique political violence and the role of the media. Look at the dates scribbled beside each article. These repetitive reports of violence underscore the systematic nature of state-sponsored terror in Argentina. Editor: So, it’s about the dissemination of news as much as the events themselves? Curator: Exactly. The artwork acts as a kind of archive, highlighting the constant stream of brutality that became normalised. Did the normalization become a tool for silencing dissent? Editor: I see. The accumulation makes it more powerful. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and a controlled narrative. Curator: Indeed, and how easily such narratives can become ingrained in public consciousness.
