Carl Christian Seydewitz made this large still life with oil on canvas, in the grand European tradition. Seydewitz has deployed impressive skill here, in his handling of the medium. Oil paint is intrinsically slow-drying and allows for layered, luminous effects. The artist has full command, evidenced in the variety of surface textures, from the velvety petals to the reflective metal vase. The whole composition is rendered in meticulous detail. This is not only about aesthetic refinement. There is the enormous labor involved in producing a painting of this scale, and the labor that went into the luxury display of flowers that would have been commissioned by wealthy patrons. The painting is also a material document: a record of the artist's ability, but also of social status and patterns of consumption at the time. Appreciating the skill involved, and the complex social world it evokes, helps us move beyond just admiring its beauty.
