Curator: Michael Rothenstein's "Cock's Head," residing here at the Tate, presents such a vibrant abstract form. What are your first impressions? Editor: It feels raw, almost violent. The thick black strokes contrast sharply with the softer washes of red and purple. I’m curious about his process. Curator: Rothenstein was deeply engaged with printmaking, and his works often challenge established artistic hierarchies. Editor: Interesting. It makes you wonder about the labor involved and the social implications of elevating printmaking. The gesture of the black strokes also makes me think of Abstract Expressionism and it's bold presentation of the artwork as a commodity. Curator: Indeed, his work pushes against conventional notions of artistic value and explores how art reflects and shapes society. Editor: It certainly leaves you contemplating the social structures inherent in image making. Curator: A bold piece that continues to provoke meaningful questions. Editor: Yes, about materiality, value and visual culture.
