Okumura Togyu made this painting of Mt. Fuji with what looks like very thinned down paint, maybe watercolor or something similar, which gives it this ephemeral, dreamy quality. The peak of the mountain is this strong, dark blue, but everything around it is soft and blurry. I'm really drawn to the way the clouds are painted, these horizontal strokes of color that kind of blend into each other, like the paint is still wet. It’s almost as if the mountain is emerging from the mist, or maybe dissolving back into it. Look how the artist uses these thin layers of pigment to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. It reminds me a little bit of some of Turner's landscapes, the way he captured light and atmosphere. Both artists seem interested in conveying a feeling or mood rather than just a literal representation of a place. It's a testament to how painting can be a conversation across time and cultures, each artist bringing their own unique perspective to the act of seeing and interpreting the world.
