Robert Frank snapped this silver gelatin print in Los Angeles; the date is unknown. I love how Frank’s work is about capturing a feeling, a mood, more than a specific scene. It’s not about being perfectly clear, but more about the grittiness of life. Here, the composition is all about layers and seeing. You’ve got the man, half-hidden, peeking, and then the peep show itself, another layer of looking. It is not a clear view. Everything is a little blurry, a little obscured. What are we really seeing? I find the stark contrast between light and shadow really striking. It’s so much about the tone, the feeling of the moment. It reminds me of Weegee, another photographer who wasn’t afraid to show the raw, sometimes seedy side of life. Both artists invite us to look beyond the surface and to question what we think we know.
