Mochizuki Hanzan created this Sutra Chest in Japan. It is an intricate object made of wood and metal. The chest immediately strikes us with its curious blend of organic and geometric forms. The structure is rectilinear, yet it’s softened by the lotus leaves, and other natural motifs inlaid across its surface. These motifs in silver and gold introduce a play of light and shadow that animates the dark wood. The lotus leaves, rendered with meticulous detail, create a textural contrast against the smooth, polished surface of the box. The chest is raised on four tapered legs, lifting the box, creating a sense of lightness and accessibility. The inlaid designs on the Sutra Chest are not merely decorative but carry symbolic weight. The lotus is a symbol of purity, spiritual awakening, and enlightenment, and may reflect Buddhist philosophical considerations around the cycle of life. It is a piece that invites contemplation on the relationship between form and function, nature and artifice, the material and the spiritual. The chest is a container of knowledge and prompts questions about how we assign value.
