"Ruiterprocessie in een landschap," or "Cavalry Procession in a Landscape," was made by Gerard ter Borch the Younger. The work is made from pen and gray ink on paper. Trained by his father, Ter Borch's life and work were deeply embedded in the social fabric of 17th-century Netherlands. His art often touched upon themes of wealth, class, and social status. During this period, the Dutch Republic was a major economic and military power. Here, we see a gathering of riders which provides a glimpse into the military culture of the time. But beyond the depiction of power, Ter Borch invites us to consider the individuals who comprised this society. Who were these riders? What were their roles in the military and in society? The image subtly explores the relationship between the individual and collective identity. It reflects a society grappling with its newfound power and the responsibilities that came with it. The muted tones and delicate lines evoke a sense of introspection, inviting the viewer to reflect on the complexities of power, identity, and history.
