This is a pencil drawing of a reclining nude figure made by J.A. Jerichau II, sometime between 1890 and 1916. I love the directness of the line here. It's searching, tentative, but also confident in its exploration of form. The way the lines vary in thickness and pressure gives the figure a real sense of volume and weight. You can almost feel the softness of the flesh. Look at the way the artist has handled the shading around the face and torso. There are these scribbled, almost chaotic marks that create a sense of depth and shadow. It's like the artist is wrestling with the form, trying to capture its essence on paper. It reminds me a little of some of Matisse’s line drawings, where the simplicity of the line belies a deep understanding of form and space. It’s not about perfection or accuracy, but about capturing a feeling, an impression. For me, that's where the real beauty lies.
