This ink drawing was made by the Russian collective Kukryniksy, sometime around the mid-20th century. The artists were clearly interested in the interplay between line and form, using simple hatch marks to build up volume. Look at the dark strokes under the chin of the central figure, the one with the binoculars. Doesn't the weight of those lines mirror his actual weight, as well as the weight of his decisions? See how this contrasts with the almost frantic marks used to depict the pile of skulls beneath his feet. These marks really create a sense of unease, reflecting the violence of the subject matter. There's a raw immediacy here, a visceral reaction that feels very authentic. It is reminiscent of the work of artists like Otto Dix or George Grosz, who weren't afraid to use art as a weapon against injustice. It all reminds me that art is at its best when it is brave enough to confront the uncomfortable truths of our world.
