Editor: This is Susanna Duncombe's "Two Classical Heads In Profile to the Left, in the Manner of a Cameo." It's a tiny watercolor drawing, and I'm struck by its quiet elegance, like a whisper from the past. What do you make of it? Curator: It's interesting, isn't it? The delicate lines, the faux-cameo effect. It feels like a memory, a half-remembered dream of classical beauty. Perhaps Duncombe was playfully engaging with the vogue for classical subjects, but with a distinctly personal, almost intimate touch. Does it feel like a copy, or something more unique? Editor: I think there is something very distinct in this work, thank you for sharing that! Curator: My pleasure; it’s the dialogue that illuminates.
