Alfred Conteh created this portrait, called "Summer." Conteh is invested in representing the nuances of the Black experience. He creates portraits, often life-sized, of Black individuals in their everyday lives. Conteh’s work addresses themes of identity and representation, exploring how Black individuals are seen and how they see themselves. His work challenges racial stereotypes and celebrates the diversity and complexity of Black life. In "Summer," the beautiful use of metallics contrasts with the child's stern expression. The child is adorned with delicate floral decorations and a suggestion of formal dress, which speaks to the performative expectation of Black children to be seen, not heard.
