Alphonse Stengelin's Zeilschepen op de Noordzee met ondergaande zon, or Sailing Ships on the North Sea with Setting Sun, captures the stark beauty of maritime life through the prominent symbol of the ship and the evocative motif of the setting sun. The ship, throughout history, has carried the weight of cultural exchange, exploration, and the human longing for the unknown. Consider, for instance, the ship's earlier symbolic role as a vessel transporting souls in Egyptian funerary rites, contrasting with its later guise as a Viking longship, emblem of conquest. Here, in Stengelin's etching, the ship is silhouetted against the setting sun which has long been associated with themes of closure and transition. As in Caspar David Friedrich’s landscapes, where the setting sun signifies mortality and introspection, this image evokes a similar contemplation of life's transient nature. It is the allure and dread of crossing thresholds, deeply embedded in our collective consciousness, that Stengelin masterfully touches upon.
