Editor: This is a stunning photograph by Edward Sheriff Curtis, entitled "A Desert Cahuilla Woman." The sepia tones give it such a warm, yet somehow melancholic feel. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The gaze, it drifts off to somewhere unseen, holding stories of resilience, of adaptation, of untold narratives etched into the landscape of her soul. Curtis was, of course, driven by a desire to preserve what he saw as a vanishing way of life. How do you feel about that intention? Editor: It feels complicated, like trying to freeze a river. It does capture a moment, though. Curator: Precisely. And those moments, filtered through his lens and our own, become part of how we understand ourselves, our history. A tricky, beautiful thing. Editor: Definitely gives me a lot to think about. Thanks!
