Robert Adams made this photograph of a sea beach and an albatross, we don't know exactly when, but the way he's worked with light and shadow really pulls me in. I love how Adams uses black and white to flatten the space, so the albatross skull in the foreground seems to float right on the surface. The tire tracks curve into the distance, almost like a drawing, and the mountains fade into the misty sky, creating layers that both reveal and conceal. There’s a push and pull between clarity and ambiguity, as if the image is constantly forming and dissolving before your eyes. Look at the grainy texture of the sand, dotted with footprints like abstract marks, a reminder of human presence and absence. This photo reminds me a little of some of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s seascapes, where the horizon line becomes a blurred edge between the sea and sky, blurring the lines between representation and abstraction. It is art that invites you to wander.
