Lajos Gulacsy painted this self-portrait, probably in Florence, with oil on canvas. The ochre palette and soft brushstrokes feel very grounded in a sense of place and time. There’s a real sense of the work being a product of its making, with the artist not trying to conceal the marks of its production. I love how the landscape in the background is handled with the same tone and touch as the artist’s face and figure. It’s like he’s part of the landscape, but also the landscape is part of him. Everything seems to bleed into everything else. Look at the upper left quadrant of the work, where the buildings are rendered in the same strokes and shade as the sky. They are at once distinct, but of one substance, as though they share a common material and history. This reminds me a little of some of the Italian futurists, like Boccioni, but with a softer touch, and maybe a little more melancholy. I think we can all relate to that.
