Christoffel van Sichem II created this intriguing woodcut, “Adoration of the Christ Child by Suppliants,” around the early 17th century. The composition immediately draws your eye upwards, from the supplicants below, to the radiant figure of the Christ Child above. The artist's use of line is particularly striking. See how the lines not only delineate form but also create a sense of dynamic movement. The etched lines form the figures kneeling in prayer, with stark contrasts between light and shadow that give the scene depth. The light radiates from the Christ Child and cascades down. This recalls the medieval iconography with its symbolic representation of divine light. The woodcut's linear structure, with the supplicants arranged in a semi-circle around the base, channels the viewer's gaze upwards. This carefully constructed composition and play of light destabilizes traditional notions of space and perspective to create a symbolically charged image. Notice how Van Sichem uses the formal elements to convey a powerful theological message.
