Cuno Amiet made this landscape of a river bank with watercolor at some point, and it's so light it almost feels like a memory. The colors are washed, but there's still something vibrant about the greens and browns. The paint is thin and transparent, like he barely touched the paper. You can see the texture of the paper coming through, which I love. There's a kind of sketchy line defining the shapes of the clouds and trees that makes me think of quick, confident strokes. I'm really drawn to the lower left corner, where the brown sort of dissolves into little black scribbles. It’s loose and playful, and it reminds me a little of Emil Nolde, who was doing similarly expressive things with color and form around the same time. Ultimately, it feels like a snapshot of a moment, full of breezy, watery impressions.
