This print, known as Domheer, was made by an anonymous artist using the technique of engraving. This process involves using a tool called a burin to carve lines directly into a metal plate, which is then inked and printed. The image itself is fascinating. Look at the way the engraver has rendered the figure’s fur-lined cloak and hat. Notice how the density and direction of the lines create a tactile sense of texture. The engraver’s skill lies not just in replicating what they see, but in translating the qualities of fur into the very different medium of metal. Consider the labor involved. Each line carefully incised, each print carefully made. The process reflects a significant investment of time and skill. By focusing on how the work was made, and the context of its making, we can gain a richer appreciation for the engraver's art. This challenges any assumed distinction between craft and fine art.
