Jean Le Pautre created this print, “Twee schenkkannen,” sometime in the 17th century. Le Pautre was a designer and engraver, working during the reign of Louis XIV, and he was known for his elaborate and fantastical ornamentation. In this print, we see two ornate ewers. The ewer on the left is being supported by a figure. The ewer on the right has been decorated with grape vines. Both are on display for a group of onlookers. The artist uses the image to display wealth and status. These objects signify a particular kind of aristocratic identity rooted in luxury and excess.
