THE ORIGINAL 2000

Alfio Giuffrida made this, 'THE ORIGINAL', by doing. It's a doing kind of piece. The wheel, the legs sticking out, it is what it is. What I really love is the way things meet in this piece. The wheel on the pole, the cart with those legs – it shouldn't work but it totally does. It's kind of funny and a little unnerving, right? I mean, those legs, so pale and still, sticking out of that bright yellow cart. It's like a cartoon that suddenly got real. And the whole thing is perched on this pole, like it's trying to be a sculpture, but it can't quite hide its everydayness. It reminds me a little of Dada, you know, where they took ordinary objects and turned them into art just by putting them in a gallery. Except this is weirder, more personal, like a dream you can't quite shake off. It's up for grabs, baby!
