I still read this landscape more as an idealized version of industrious flow of nature to supply civic strength, and what happens to social bonds when it is severed… The towers and monuments affirm civic and spiritual continuity despite challenges of the modernizing era, don't you think? My lens finds an acknowledgement here, through the river's timber highway, that power comes not only from monumental architecture and spirituality but that the very literal social power came at nature’s expense.
