Curator: What strikes me first is the overwhelming flatness of this gelatin-silver print; there is an atmospheric dreaminess to the tonality. Editor: And for good reason. This photograph, dating back to 1868, offers a view of Hradčany in Prague, captured by Charles Gaudin. Notice how the timber logs form a strikingly regimented plane. It's very romantic. Curator: Regimented is right, there's a heavy feeling in all this lumber floating along the Vltava, the ancient Czech name for the Moldau River; a melancholic feeling of potential, like trees headed to be shaped by human demands. I wonder about their journey downstream. Editor: The visual symbolism of wood in Romanticism is important. Consider the enduring strength, life, and promise in each piece floating on the surface. They mirror the enduring architectural forms on the horizon. These enduring qualities can imply strength or weakness and its use can provide us the viewer insight into political contexts of power or commentary on society’s reliance on the finite strength of wood and, by consequence, civilization itself. Curator: That certainly brings the weightiness of the scene to the fore, yes the visual of social order at that time. Do you consider also that perhaps these lumber products would fuel Prague society? I mean, what might that mean to our view of the photo from the 21st century, especially? Editor: That is likely, Historian. Wood meant life and possibility as you say. I still read this landscape more as an idealized version of industrious flow of nature to supply civic strength, and what happens to social bonds when it is severed… The towers and monuments affirm civic and spiritual continuity despite challenges of the modernizing era, don't you think? Curator: Perhaps. My lens finds an acknowledgement here, through the river's timber highway, that power comes not only from monumental architecture and spirituality but that the very literal social power came at nature’s expense. Thanks to Gaudin's photograph for revealing these layers. Editor: Indeed. Each piece drifting to fulfill its purpose in time. A thoughtful rendering for anyone's considerations about civic balance.
