Martinus Rørbye made this watercolour, entitled "Turkish vessels, a jug and two flagons", during his travels in Constantinople. The image presents a collection of luxury goods, acquired by the artist during his travels. In the 19th century, travel to the Ottoman Empire became increasingly common for European artists and intellectuals. Orientalism was in vogue and the acquisition, display, and depiction of foreign goods allowed the European Bourgeoisie to display their wealth, refinement, and worldliness. Rørbye seems to have understood the cultural codes of his time; the composition is arranged to maximize their aesthetic impact. The cultural and social context of the work cannot be understood without considering the dynamics of colonialism, trade, and artistic exchange in the 19th century. Art historical research allows us to examine artist's journals, sales records, and other documents. Through this we can interpret the cultural and social significance of artworks such as this.
