This postcard to Hendrik Teding van Berkhout was made by Willem Adrianus Grondhout, probably in 1932. The writing is so beautiful, flowing, and confident. It's so free. The ink sits on the paper with such grace, it feels like a performance. Look at the way the lines curve and loop, thick in some places, thin in others, all with a subtle pressure. These gestures, these handwritten marks, are like drawings in themselves, each one a tiny dance. The stamps and postal markings are layered over this personal message, adding another layer of texture and meaning. It reminds me a little of Cy Twombly's work, actually, these layers of history and human touch. Art is really a conversation, isn't it? We're all just talking to each other across time, leaving our little marks along the way.
