This is a photograph called “De fontein bij het verblijf van de stedehouder van Karangasem Gusti Bagur,” made by Johanna Hermina Marmelstein. It's a small print, only about 4x3 inches. Looking at the image, I wonder what it was like to be Marmelstein, setting up her camera in this place. It seems so distant in time and culture. It is intriguing to imagine her choosing this particular angle, trying to capture something of the place's essence. The photo is in black and white, which flattens the scene, giving it a timeless quality. The eye is drawn to the figures perched around the fountain, their presence adding a human element to this architectural landscape. The way the light falls suggests something about the weather, the feel of the day. It gives the whole scene a particular mood of contemplative stillness. Photographs always feel like a conversation across time, don’t they? Each artist picking up where another has left off, trying to show us how they see the world.
