Glenn Wilson made this watercolor of a handmade chair sometime in the 20th century, and what strikes me is the gentle, almost reverent way he’s approached it. Look at the thin washes of color, how they barely cover the surface, letting the paper breathe. It's like he's trying to capture the essence of the chair, its simple form and humble materials. The muted palette of earthy browns and tans adds to this feeling of quiet contemplation. I’m drawn to the way the light catches the woven seat, each strand carefully rendered. It reminds me of Agnes Martin's delicate grids. Both artists share a similar interest in the beauty of simple, repetitive forms. Both celebrate the act of making, of finding something profound in the everyday. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always need to shout; sometimes, the most powerful statements are whispered.
