Curator: This intriguing piece, titled "[no title: p. 346]" is by Esq Tom Phillips. Although undated, the artist was born in 1937. Editor: It's quite striking, with those overlaid circles and the ominous phrase "turn the dark lamp". There’s a dense, almost claustrophobic feel to the composition. Curator: Phillips often incorporates found texts into his work. Here, he’s built upon an existing page, layering imagery and selectively obscuring words. Consider the impact of collage in the latter half of the 20th century and the re-use and appropriation of pre-existing content. Editor: The page number and heading "A Human Document" give it a historical, almost archival quality. But it's been disrupted, transformed into something more unsettling. Curator: Indeed, the combination of text and image suggests a dialogue between past and present, between the objective and the subjective. Editor: Well, it certainly gives one pause. It’s a work that lingers in the mind.
