This print was made by Stefano della Bella in the 17th century, using etching. This process involves coating a metal plate with wax, then drawing through it with a sharp needle to expose the metal. The plate is then immersed in acid, which bites into the exposed lines, creating grooves. Ink is applied to the plate, filling these grooves, and then the surface is wiped clean. Finally, paper is pressed onto the plate, transferring the ink and creating the print. This was a highly skilled, labor-intensive practice. Note the extraordinary detail della Bella was able to achieve. Also consider the commercial context. Etchings such as this were made in multiples, and sold to patrons who would have used them as sources of design inspiration. Della Bella was therefore working in a mode that was both technically sophisticated and geared toward consumption. His artistry lies not only in the image, but also in his mastery of repeatable production.
