Joakim Skovgaard made this watercolor of a bell tower in Sansepolcro, probably on site, capturing the light and air of the place. It's all about the process here – the marks are tentative, searching, as if he's figuring out the tower as he goes. Look at the way the blue sky is just a wash, almost like a stain, letting the paper breathe through. There’s a kind of transparency, a lightness that makes the stone feel airy, not heavy. I love how the red roof pops against that delicate blue, a visual vibration. And check out the tiny cross on top, like a little doodle, a final flourish. It reminds me a bit of Corot, his loose touch and love of light, but with a Scandinavian sensibility. It’s not about perfection, but about feeling, about the sheer joy of looking and making.
