Léon Davent created this engraving of Urania, one of twelve muses and goddesses, sometime in the 16th century. In classical mythology, Urania is the muse of astronomy, and here she’s depicted with a globe, a symbol of her celestial domain. During the Renaissance, there was renewed interest in classical learning and mythology, but it's also a period marked by rigid social hierarchies and gender roles. Urania, draped in flowing robes, embodies a kind of idealized femininity, but she's also a figure of intellectual authority. The pose, with her head resting on her hand, is often associated with melancholy or contemplation. Consider how knowledge was often gendered during this period, with women excluded from many forms of education. Representing Urania, a female figure, as the muse of astronomy challenges those constraints.
