Dirk Eversen Lons created this etching of a man with a fur cap in a winter landscape. The composition is divided by the stark contrast in scale between the large figure in the foreground and the diminutive figures populating the distant winter scene. The colossal man, rendered with detailed cross-hatching, dominates our view, while the others are linear figures almost dissolving into the background. The perspective of this image provokes an emotional response. The contrast destabilizes our expectations of space and depth. This etching manipulates semiotic codes related to scale and perspective. Lons seems to be engaging with emerging ideas about perception and representation. How does the artist challenge the established order of things? It invites us to reflect on the ways in which art can destabilize fixed meanings.
