This is a page from a sketchbook, by Niels Larsen Stevns, made at an unknown date with pen and ink. Looking at this small page, I'm drawn to the ghostly traces of erased marks, swirling like thoughts half-formed. There is a contrast between the clean lines of the notebook paper and the fluidity of the ink, where the evidence of process is clear to see. The layered lines and smudges create a surface that feels both chaotic and controlled, and they remind me that artmaking is an act of discovery. The numbers down the side, jotted in a hurry, make me think of Cy Twombly, his raw, gestural marks, and an interest in the messy, unresolved aspects of drawing, inviting us to linger in the in-between spaces.
