"U(lykkelige) H(ændelser)" Nr. 3 is an etching made by Georg Christian Schule, sometime around 1797. The late 18th century was a period of social upheaval and nascent revolution, ideas of personal liberty were emerging, but also contending with aristocratic power structures. Here, we see a man in an interior. He is carefully reaching out, as if interacting with an object placed on a desk. There is something fragile, tentative, and perhaps humorous in his gesture. The work might speak to the delicate balance between personal agency and societal constraints. Schule lived through tumultuous times, witnessing transformations and disruptions to the old order. His artwork appears to reflect these tensions, the ‘unhappy incidents’ hinting at the unpredictable nature of life and the delicate balancing act required to navigate it. It captures a fleeting moment, inviting us to reflect on the subtle narratives embedded within everyday existence.
