Editor: Here we have Zeng Fanzhi's "Huang Jiguang," painted in 2006, using acrylic. The aggressive brushstrokes and murky palette create a really unsettling feeling for me. How would you interpret this work? Curator: It strikes me as a profound exploration of artistic labour itself. Look at the dense thickets of paint. Consider the physical act required to build up that surface with such clear expressionist force. Does the material itself seem to express themes such as conflict, resistance, and possibly even, given the narrative subject, nationalistic fervor? Editor: So you’re seeing the artwork's value less in its depiction of a historical figure, and more in the raw labor embedded in the acrylic paint and expressive brushstrokes? Curator: Precisely! It’s the application of paint, the conscious and perhaps even unconscious marks left by Zeng, that demand attention. How does Zeng employ these materials to shape our understanding, perhaps even our consumption, of historical narratives and patriotic imagery? It invites questions about propaganda and its means. Editor: That makes sense. The roughness of the paint does convey that tension effectively, it isn't necessarily glorifying this martyr. Curator: Exactly. Think about the accessibility of acrylics as a medium versus traditional oil paints. Does this democratization of materials also hint at something about the democratization of heroes, of the consumption of national narratives by the masses? Editor: I never thought of it that way before! I was focused on the landscape aspects and dramatic figure but you're right. There’s a lot of social commentary locked into the artistic practice here. Curator: Ultimately, it prompts us to ask: whose labor and which materials are valorized, and how do those choices contribute to the work’s meaning within a broader socio-political context? Editor: That really changes how I see this piece. Thanks!
