This pair of shoes was made by Ait Ouaouzguite Amazigh, likely from textile and fiber. Look at how the maker constructed these, I mean really get in close! The embroidery is so dense, these marks and shapes are layered with history and meaning. The repeated triangular forms, the lozenge motif at the center, it all suggests a deep connection to the earth, to tradition, to a way of life expressed materially. The palette, subdued yet vibrant, adds another layer. There are these earthy tones combined with pops of pink and orange, which feels so grounded. I can almost feel the texture, the labor, the patience. You can imagine each stitch being placed with intention. These shoes aren't just functional, they are storytelling. These make me think a little of the Gee's Bend quilters, or perhaps contemporary artists like Pacita Abad who use textiles to similar ends. Each embraces the imperfections, and celebrates the power of art as an act of preservation and communication.
